Abstract: The Laboratory for the Detection of Irradiated Foodstuffs is part of the IRASM Department (a real national centre for techological irradiation) from the “Horia Hulubei” National Institute of Research-Development for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH). The IRASM Department is structured around the Multipurpose Irradiation Facility (IRASM), facility which is the result of the collaboration between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Romanian Government. The irradiation facility is considered facility of national interest. The task of this project is the infrastructure development of the Laboratory for Detection of Irradiated Foodstuffs and its accreditation in the field of testing and conformity certification of food products according to legislation and standards from the field of food irradiation. The specific objectives of the project focusses on the assurance of the testing servicies of conformity according to prescriptions of the European Directives 1999/2/EC and 1999/3/EC and of European Standards harmonized to directives (EN 1784, EN 1785, EN 1786, EN 1787, EN 1788, EN 13708, EN 13751, EN 13783, EN 13784 and EN 14569). These are useful mainly to public authorities in the survey process of the food market (hygiene institutes, public health directions, public and nongovernmental organozations for consumer protection etc), but also to producers and retailers of food products for the fulfilment of the obligations derived from the directives prescriptions. The project deals with the field of agricultural and food products and its targets are: -the asimilation and implementation in the laboratory of testing methods from the above standards, testing methodes which could not be applied for the moment in the country; -the development and improvement of performances and specific equipment quality from laboratory necessary for testing; -the development of conformity certification services offered by the laboratory in the field ruled by the above European directives. The project will end with the accreditation of the Laboratory for detection of irradiated foodstuffs and the dissemination of the results to public and nongovernmental organizations, producers and retailers of food products.
