Abstract: The general objective of this project consists in the promotion of a complex ensemble of analytical methods in view of the setting-up of an underground-located laboratory (ULB), within the UNIREA-Slanic Prahova mine meant to the measuring of radionuclide content within the human body, to the measuring of the environmental and alimentary samples and to the radiation metrology into an ultra-low radiation background having scientific and applied purposes.
Similar laboratories are under operation in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland , Great Britain and Russian Federation. The selected zone is at a depth of 260m under the soil level, which is to about 590m-water equivalent. The envisaged potentialities:
-the measurements by high-resolution gamma-spectrometry of extremely-low actively samples;
-high-sensitivity whole body counter;
-radiation metrology of equipment which have accuracy to measure the natural background.
By setting-up of a laboratory of this kind the individuals who were exposed to internal contamination with natural and artificial radionuclides, will be properly monitored (miners from uraniumferans industry, miners from coal extraction etc.)
Also, it will be possible to measure with high accuracy the specific activity of gamma-emitting radionuclides from both environmental and food samples which are needed by certain economical agents and, respectively, by some institutions which participate to international programmes. When speaking of ionising radiations metrology, the calibrations of the instrumentation meant for the measurement of dosimetrical values are conditioned, at the lower limit of the measuring range, by the radiation background so much can be reduced the lower limit of the measuring range which can be attested by calibration.
The laboratory will stand for a special opportunity for our participation at the CELLAR European Project.
