The reaction IrAl + melt is the eutectic reaction, so he got a single compound by SHS reaction, which is IrAl2, 75. In terms of crystallinity, the material obtained by SHS is more crystalline than that obtained by the "ball milling. The crystallite size for IrAl is 3.6nm (100-200)nm, for IrAl2.75 -7.4 nm (111-222).
Quantity of CoAl formed by the "ball milling" and heat treatment was 97.5% wt and 94% wt by SHS. The crystallite size of CoAl prepared by "ball milling" is 3.53(100-200)nm and that 14.3 nm prepared by SHS. The forming reactions of compounds Co2Al4, Co13Al4, CoAl3, Co2Al9 are peritectic reactions. At preparation of CoAl3 were obtain a mixture of compounds with mass ratio Co: Al = 1:3.
Strength for samples of CoAl has an average of 145.7 MPa. The breaking is fragile, on grain. The DRX is highlight a change in phase composition, The massive appearance of Co4Al13 and Co2Al5 as nanometri particles, precipitated at the limit of grains.
For a mass ratio of iridium in the IrAl disc and Ir100 of 0.79% results a ratio of specific activity equal to 1.34, for the discs IrAl3 at the report of a mass equal to 0.44 results a 1.95 ratio of specific activities. It can be seen as a decrease in the amount of iridium in the disc leads to a significant increase of specific activity.
For the compounds of Co-Al system is necessary a analysis performed at large times of irradiation, (saturated) to highlight for better the phenomenon; it is recommended to use sources with intermetallic compounds targets there where the inside temperature not exceeding 3000C due to peritectic reaction of Co-Al system, as are the sources for medicine.
