Abstract: The research project proposes, unprecedented at national level, non-destructive and non-contact application of Fourier transform spectroscopy for the molecular structure identification and characterization of pigments used in valuable art works signed by roumanian painters. The proposed instrumentation is competitive at international level, incorporating technologies which allow direct non-contact analysis of art objects by using of mobile probes. The novelty at national level consists of the possibility for non-contact spectral analysis on the middle infrared spectral domain. The higher purpose in which the approached research field targets is the authentification and characterization of oil paintings signed by roumanian painters with international visibility. The applications of non-destructive and non-contact analysis methods are the only ones accepted by the art works curators/restaurateurs/investigators community. A secondary interest within the project is the oil paintings spectral pattern stability or changes which appear after natural or artificial ageing of artworks. For the case of bio-deterioration of oil paintings, after exposure to improper storage conditions, the project focuses on the investigation of changes which may appear after the use of non-destructive and non-invasive bio-decontamination treatment by gamma irradiation. The investigation of changes after gamma irradiation, which may appear in the colour and molecular structure of pigments within the oil paintings, assures a higher confidence of curators and restaurateurs in the advantages of application of irradiation technologies. Finally in-situ analysis of a significant number of oil paintings of representative roumanian painters (on the location of museum collections), of which artworks present an international visibility.

Objectives:

THE STAGES OF THE PROJECT AND DELIVERY DATES
1. The experimental models achievement and the optimization of non-destructive and non-contact spectral acquisition methods. (2010-12-10)
2. The carrying out of an experiment of gamma irradiation at usual doses for biological decontamination of the art works. The estimation of the effects of the irradiation on the performances of the methods of non-destructive and non-contact spectral characterization. (2011-12-09)
3. Non-distructiv analysis in situ of roumaine paintings. (2012-07-27)
