Abstract: The 99mTc radionuclide is today the most used radionuclide in nuclear medicine for diagnosis purpose. Today, 99mTc is the radionuclide used in 85 % of nuclear medicine diagnosis, it is due not only to its ideal nuclear properties but also its easy availability throughout the 99Mo/99mTc generator. 99Mo/99mTc gel generator, the new type of 99Mo/99mTc generator, presented in present project, is based on a polypropylene column filled with a zirconium molybdenum matrix 99Mo-Zr; the raw material is 99Mo obtained by irradiation at nuclear reactor 98Mo (n, gama) 99Mo. The advantages of “99Mo/99mTc gel generator”, are: -the 99MoO3, raw material obtained by (n,g) nuclear reaction at nuclear reactor, is more reasonable than raw material obtained by separation from fission fragments; -the raw material is obtained in our country at Triga Pitesti nuclear reactor, excluding the import; -the Na99mTcO4 solution obtained by elution from 99Mo/99mTc gel generator, has a chemical, radiochemical and radionuclidical purity more higher than the classic generator with alumina column; in this case the alpha, beta-gamma fission impurities are not present; -the 99Mo binding is more stronger in zirconium molybdenum matrix (in this matrix there are chemical bundles), than in classical generator where 99Mo are absorbed on the alumina column (in this case there are physical interactions); -the necessities of 99Mo/99mTc generators in Rumanian nuclear medicine are not so big, so that it’s not justified to development the 99Mo separation from fission fragments technology, a technology which is expensive and generate a lot of radioactive wastes

Objectives:

THE STAGES OF THE PROJECT AND DELIVERY DATES
1. Experimental studies in order to obtain the optimal stoechiometrical Mo-Zr ratio in the non radioactive gel matrix. (2007-12-15)
2. Obtaining of the 99Mo irradiated targets, designing of the irradiation and processing methods. (2008-06-15)
3. Obtaining of: radiochemical product Na299MoO4 for pharmaceutical use and 99Mo-Zr gel. Physicochemical and radiochemical parameters determination for Na299MoO4 and 99Mo-Zr gel. (2009-01-01)
4. Realization of 99Mo/99mTc gel generator – experimental model. (2009-12-15)
