Abstract: Nuclear waste management will be one of the most difficult challenges facing industrialized countries during the coming decades. One possible option for the elimination of hte excess plutonium arising from nuclear power plants and dismantled nuclear weapons is its incineration in a light-water reactor. To that purpose, the concept of an inert matrix fuel has recently been advanced.
Crystalline ceramics, particularly zirconia, spinel and SiC were identified as potential candidates due to their high melting point, good thermal conductivity, absence of phase transformations at high temperatures, stability against radiation, good mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, low solubility in water, retention of radiotoxic elements and adequate neutronic properties. The behaviour of He produced by the disintegration of actinides and of other noble gases appears to be a very crucial issue.
In this project we propose complex studies concerning the production and recovery of radiation damage in nuclear ceramics (zirconia, spinel and SiC). Both single crystals and thin films deposited by advanced techniques will be studied. To characterize the implantation profiles and the damage profiles induced by ion bombardments IBA techniques (RBS, RBS/C, ERDA, NRA) will be used.
The nature and evolution of radiation defects, the occurrence of irradiation-induced phase transformations and hte ion beam modifications of the surface of materials will be determined by additional advanced techniques such as XRD, AFM, SEM, TEM.
