Abstract: SPIRAL2 is one of the new European research facilities selected by ESFRI (European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures) in its list of priorities. The goal of SPIRAL2 is the production of radioactive ion beams at intensities that are not currently available at any other nuclear physics infrastructure; this will allow the development of a unique worldwide research program. IFIN-HH, the only Romanian partner in the project, takes part in the research and development activities of FP7 SPIRAL2 Preparatory Phase project in three work packages. The WP6 includes the development of several elements of the accelerator: “beam dumpâ€, “fast chopper†and “beam diagnosis elements†with the participation of 6 European laboratories, its coordination being ensured by IFIN-HH. The task of IFIN-HH is the development of a beam loss monitor system based on the measurement of radiation induced by the beam interaction with the accelerator components. The WP5 is dedicated to the development of instrumentation for the experiments, with IFIN-HH involved in DESIR, FAZIA and NSF collaborations. In WP7 the contribution of IFIN-HH is related to intensity estimations of the radioactive beams produced in fusion-evaporation reactions.
