3D image reconstruction of hidden objects based on dirrectional muon flux analysys proiecte.nipne.ro/pn3/17-projects.html
Acronym: HERO Contracting Authority: Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) Number / Date of the contract: 127 TE / 2020-09-15
Project Manager: Dr. Denis Iulian Stanca Partners: Starting date / finishing date: 2020-09-15 / 2022-09-14 Project value: 431900 RON Abstract: Muon tomography is an emerging technique, with great potential in different areas, like archaeology, cavernometry, vulcanology, geology, industry, security, border monitoring etc.
Due to that, it has great economical value, being a complementary technique to usual standard methods, like X-rays, gamma rays, ultrasounds.
The HERO project’s main objective is to develop a software platform that can be used with minimal knowledge of particle and detector physics by experts with other fields of interest, like vulcanologists,
archaeologists, geologists, etc.
There are two key intermediate objectives for implementing “3D image reconstruction of hidden objects based on directional muon flux analysis”.
First is to develop a procedure for 3D reconstruction of objects from 2D images, obtained by transmission muography applications, based on triangulation and clustering algorithms.
The second is to evaluate the existing 3D reconstruction algorithms for deviation muography and to develop an online procedure based on them in order to image the inner structure of dense objects in real time. Modeling of a high resolution plastic scintillator detector will be implemented in Geant4, the results obtained from the interaction with the cosmic ray muon flux being used for the analysis.
