Abstract: Propolis is a complex natural matrix synthesized by honey bees (Apis mellifera) from products collected from tree buds, resins, various substances secreted by plants and other plant sources mixed with their own substances, such as enzymes. Chemical analysis of propolis is difficult due to the large number (over 300 types of molecules) of compounds that are part of it. In addition, its composition depends on the local flora and the period of the year in which it was harvested, as well as on the genetic background of the bee families. In Romania, propolis is one of the most studied bee products, being similar to poplar propolis. It is composed mainly of flavonoids (pinocembrine, pinobanksin, quercetin, chrysin and galangin) and phenolic acids and their esters.
The composition of propolis depends on the local flora which ultimately determines the amounts of flavones, flavanones, flavonols, dihydroflavonols and phenols. These quantities must be correlated with the phytogeographical diversity. To understand how propolis extracts interact with living cells, it is important to study the effects of these extracts on bio-mimetic lipid membranes.
In view of these, the general objectives of this project are: (i) to establish a correlation between the main components of propolis and phytogeographical diversity, (ii) to study the interaction between propolis extracts and model lipid membranes and (iii) to establish a correlation between the main components of propolis and its effects on bio-mimetic membranes.

Objectives: (i) to establish a correlation between the main components of propolis and phytogeographical diversity;
(ii) to study the interaction between propolis extracts and model lipid membranes; (iii) to establish a correlation between the main components of propolis and the effects produced by these components on the bio-mimetic membranes.
