Breakthrough method for optical waveguides synthesis: The coming era of nanotechnology proiecte.nipne.ro/pn3/50-projects.html
Acronym: NanoTracks Contracting Authority: Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) Number / Date of the contract: PCE 50 / 2021-02-05 P4 - Cercetare fundamentala si de frontiera Cod proiect: PN-III-P4-ID-PCE-2020-1379 Project Manager: Gihan Velisa Partners: Starting date / finishing date: 2021-01-04 / 2023-12-13 Project value: 1198032 RON Abstract: Research has shown that irradiation with swift heavy ion irradiation (SHI) for which electronic excitations and ionizations constitute (Se) the main deceleration process can result in the formation of latent nanoscale ion tracks in a broad range of materials. Since the refractive index of ion tracks varies significantly from those in the bulk, ion tracks can be used to construct waveguides. In contrast to classical methods (film epitaxy/deposition), SHI present new possibilities to better control ion track properties and thus more flexibility to tailor the properties of waveguides. Despite these benefits, the exploitation of waveguides engineering through SHI is inaccessible to many research laboratories and industry because the SHI production requires a large accelerator facility, which has severe limitations in terms of portability and flexibility. A cheaper alternative would be to take advantage of the synergy
between Se from intermediate energy ions and pre-existing damage in materials that results also in ion track formation. Since knowledge on this synergistic effect is scarce, the first objective of this project is to advance the understanding and modeling of Se effects on ion track formation in defective solids. The second objective is to determine the relationship between irradiation conditions and the resulting refractive index depth profile, which will be used for pushing the use of this effect as a novel means to fabricate waveguides in materials.
Objectives: Two (interconnected) original and innovative objectives are defined:
- O1: Understanding the response of defective KTaO3 to ionizing ion irradiation;
- O2: Determining the relationship between irradiation conditions and the resulting n(z).
