Abstract: The application is motivated by the desire of the project director to return to Romania and IFIN-HH after a 19 year career in USA, at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. The science motivation is to establish a group dedicated to studies in nuclear astrophysics in IFIN-HH. Nuclear astrophysics is increasingly a major motivation in low and even intermediate nuclear physics research. It combines physics across a huge range of dimensions; from nuclei to stars and the Universe. With its current and future accelerator capabilities, IFIN can do more in this sub-field of modern nuclear physics. Research using indirect methods like: gamma-ray spectroscopy of low spin states, one-nucleon breakup at intermediate energies, decay spectroscopy and the Trojan Horse Method is proposed. Project director has original contributions to the development of these methods and their use. The research proposed implies experiments done in Bucharest using stable beams and cooperation with groups outside Romania, including experiments at international facilities using radioactive beams. The steps to establish a group are spelled out. Support is required to establish the group, support for participation in experiments and for minimal start-up instrumentation.
Objectives: The project had two motivations, as declared in part C1. Introduction to
project's problematic:
- the intent of the project director to return to Romania after a 19 years stay and work in the United States.
- to start a group working in nuclear astrophysics and the present
proposal is to establish an initial funding for exploratory research in this
area. This is the second, the scientific motivation of this proposal.
